Job Title: Community First Response Wellness Ambassador
Job Type: Part-Time, Non-Exempt; requires evenings, late nights, weekends and holiday hours
Reports to: Director of Therapeutic Wellness Services
Position Summary
LIFE Camp, Inc. seeks committed and experienced individuals for a community and hospital-based gun violence prevention program that aims to reduce and prevent shootings through the use of public health strategies. The Therapeutic and Wellness First Responder works individually and as a team to prevent and respond to neighborhood shootings and killings. They provide conflict mediation, referral, and follow-up services to victims of violence and their families. This work is a collaboration between a community-based Cure Violence replication program and partner hospital(s).
Position Responsibilities, but are not limited to the following:
Respond to emergency calls for therapeutic support in response to shootings and other incidents of violence, to provide therapeutic support on-site and mitigate the impact of trauma
Work with Credible Clinician and Hospital Response teams as needed to connect with individuals, their families and community members impacted in order to provide trauma informed care on-site
Follow up with referrals to additional therapeutic services and/or assistance with navigation through victims services if needed
Report to the Credible Clinician and keep them informed of all emergency response notifications and communications
Keep a daily log documenting all activity on the LIFE Camp PeaceMobile (Mobile Trauma Unit) as well as contacts with impacted individuals, their families and community partners
Attend all program trainings
Attend weekly staff meetings and other team and implementation meetings as required
Qualifications:
Adult 25 years of age or older who has lost a family member or loved one to gun violence and has the willingness and capacity to help others, based on their lived experience through the trauma of grief and loss
Ability to respond at a moment’s notice to ensure services are provided in a timely and professional manner
Experience working with and understanding of the needs of communities of color and the impacts of trauma, violence and poverty on wellness and quality of life
Fundamental understanding of mental health, public health and public safety
Fundamental understanding of trauma-informed services and case management
Understanding and experience working with high risk youth and their families.
Capacity for creative problem-solving, conflict resolution, and conflict mediation
Self-motivation, initiative, sound judgment, and commitment to ongoing learning
Roots / Experience in Southeast Queens & knowledge of its geography
Additional Skills:
Background in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Youth Development or Family Therapy, Psy.M, CCTP, or professional therapeutic wellness services a plus
A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by coursework in psychology, sociology, anthropology and/or related disciplines, plus one year of full-time paid experience assisting in either the evaluation, development, implementation or direct work in health and wellness.
Emergency response training a plus (CPR, First Aid, Mental Health First Aid)
Driver’s License a plus
